Summer UV Protection For the Eyes

Summer's almost here, and that means the return of hot, sunny days and fun outside! Whether it's sunbathing at the beach, hiking the great outdoors, or just strolling through the city to take in the sights, almost everyone will find a way to get outside and enjoy the summer weather.

Silicon Valley Eye Physicians wants you to have a fabulous time in the sun this summer, while also remembering to protect yourself from harmful UV radiation. Most people know to slap on sunscreen or a hat to protect their skin during the hottest part of the day, but did you know your eyes also need protection from UV rays?

Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation can damage the eyes, sometimes permanently. Sun exposure – especially if combined with glare from water, sand, or pavement – can cause the equivalent of a temporary burn to the corneal surface of the eye. Doctors are also concerned that repeated UV exposure could cause permanent damage to either the lens of the eye or the retina, contributing to eye disease. Ultraviolet radiation is believed to be a risk factor in the development of both cataracts and macular degeneration.

What can you do to protect your eyes this summer? The best thing to do is to invest in a good pair of UV blocking sunglasses and wear them consistently while outdoors. When buying sunglasses, it is important to look for a pair that block at least 98 percent of UV radiation (both UV-A and UV-B). Wearing a hat is also a smart way to protect your eyes, as is avoiding too much direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

By following these few simple suggestions, you can safely enjoy the summer and help ensure strong, healthy eyes now and in the future. So get out there and have a great time!
