How Can Eyelid Surgery Improve My Appearance?

Bags under your eyes? Droopy lids and wrinkles around your eye line? Enhancing your appearance with cosmetic eyelid surgery can remove years from your face, giving a younger, fresher look. It’s no wonder this procedure is popular in the US.  In fact, in 2018, it ranked in the top five cosmetic surgical operations, according to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. However, like every surgery, it comes with risks. If you’re considering cosmetic eyelid surgery, our Sunnyvale eye doctor reviews the facts below – so you can make an informed decision.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is the official term for a range of eyelid surgeries, including upper and lower eyelid surgery, droopy eyelid surgery and Asian eye surgery. All of these procedures share the goal of improving the overall appearance of the eye area. They can reduce drooping and diminish puffiness, whether age-related or inherited. These surgeries are done only on the eyelids or surrounding ocular tissue, not on the eyes themselves.

What Can Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery Do?

Also called an “eye lift,” blepharoplasty can treat cosmetic disorders such as:

  • Bags under your eyes
  • Surplus of skin and wrinkles in your lower eyelid
  • Puffiness in your eyelids, caused by fatty deposits
  • Droopy eyelid/s (ptosis)
  • Folds in your upper eyelid that interfere with clear vision

What is Asian Eyelid Surgery?

Asian blepharoplasty, also called “double-eyelid surgery,” reshapes the skin that encircles your eyes and forms a crease in eyelids that don’t have one. About half of the Asian population is born with monolids, which are eyelids that lack a visible crease over the lash line. People sometimes choose this procedure to help minimize puffiness that can give a look of fatigue.

Is Eyelid Surgery Safe?

While generally safe, possible risks include issues with the anesthesia, pain that doesn’t dissipate immediately, infection, bruising, swelling, and bleeding from the incisions. Eyes can also become extra light-sensitive and dry.
