How to Naturally Reduce Your Dry Eye Symptoms

Dry Eyes treatments Silicon Valley Eye Physicians

Along with all the services we offer at our Sunnyvale blimeye clinic, our eye care team also provides eye health tips to help you and your family see clearly and comfortably every day. If you’re suffering from dry eye symptoms such as red, itchy, watery or gritty-feeling eyes, our eye care team can help. Here are some natural ways to help reduce dry eye symptoms, including:

Eat Right For Eye Health

Making sure you’re eating right can go a long way toward reducing or eliminating dry eye symptoms. Vitamins you should look for include:

  • Vitamin A (retinol)
  • Vitamins B2, B6 and B12
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E

Many of these vitamins can be found in leafy green vegetables, whole grains and fresh fruits.

Make A Warm Compress

Warm compresses are a great way to open up the meibomian glands in your eyelids and improve oil flow into the eyes. This helps to stabilize the tear film, slow down tear evaporation, and minimize dry eye symptoms.

You can do this by soaking a small towel in comfortably warm water, squeezing out the excess water and placing the compress on your face. It should stay warm for about 5-10 minutes.

For a ready-made compress, our eye doctors recommend the Bruder Moist Heat Eye Compress.

Give Your Eyes A Screen Break

Studies have shown that all the time we spend these days on smartphones, tablets, computers and watching TV promotes dry eye symptoms by reducing how often we blink while looking at them.

Give your eyes a break at least every 20 minutes, and do some blinking exercises to rehydrate the eyes. Blinking exercises you can do include:

Close-Pause-Pause-Open-Relax

  1. Without squeezing, gently close your eyes.
  2. Pause and keep your eyes closed for 2 seconds.
  3. Gently open your eyes and relax them.

Repeat 5 times

Close-Pause-Pause-Squeeze-Open-Relax

  1. Without squeezing, gently close your eyes.
  2. Pause and keep your eyes closed for 2 seconds.
  3. While keeping your eyes closed, squeeze your eyelids together slowly and gently.
  4. Gently open your eyes and relax them.

Repeat 5 times
