Understanding Myopia & Your Treatment Options

Myopia (nearsightedness) is a common vision problem that makes it difficult to focus on distant objects.

Fortunately, there are a number of treatments available to restore your ability to focus at any distance.

Silicon Valley Eye Physicians can screen you for myopia at our two office locations in Santa Clara and Sunnyvale, CA...

3 Most Common Symptoms of Myopia

Struggling to See Distant Objects

If you have trouble seeing street signs, presentations, or any faraway objects, you could have some degree of nearsightedness.

Frequently Squinting

Many patients with undiagnosed myopia often find themselves squinting when they try to focus on faraway objects.

Suffering Headaches

Straining your eyes and struggling to focus can cause headaches, an uncomfortable symptom of myopia that can dramatically affect your quality of life.

Top 3 Factors That Increase Your Risk

In many cases, myopia is hereditary. If one of your family members suffers from this vision problem, you are at higher risk of developing it, too. Medical conditions including diabetes also increase your risk of becoming nearsighted. Additionally, there is evidence that a lack of exposure to natural sunlight can increase the risk of myopia in young children.

Here's how these factors directly affect your vision...

Genetics

Many health conditions, including myopia, are passed on from parent to child.

Diabetes

High glucose levels can cause your lens to swell, hurting its ability to focus on distant objects.

Lack of Sun Exposure

A recent study found that exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation protected patients 14 to 29 against myopia.

What Causes Nearsightedness?

Myopia is the result of a refractive error, which usually occurs because of an irregularity in the structure of the eye. The condition develops when:

  • The eyeball is too long
  • The cornea or lens is too curved
  • Both of these irregularities occur

These deformities interfere with how the light enters your eye, preventing it from focusing on the surface of the retina. Instead, it focuses in front of the retina, leading to difficulty seeing at a distance.

If you are suffering from this refractive error, you are not alone...

Diagnosing myopia is fairly simple...

What to Expect during a Diagnostic Exam:

You will need to visit one of our offices in Sunnyvale or Santa Clara to undergo an exam. Typically, this process only takes about half an hour. First, you will be asked to read an eye chart. If you struggle to read the smallest letters, we will perform a retinoscope test. By shining a light into the eye, the doctor can evaluate how your eye focuses light.

If the light focuses in front of the retina, you likely have myopia. We can then recommend treatment options to improve your vision.
