Top 3 Factors That Increase Your Risk
Here's how these factors directly affect your vision...
What Causes Nearsightedness?
Myopia is the result of a refractive error, which usually occurs because of an irregularity in the structure of the eye. The condition develops when:
- The eyeball is too long
- The cornea or lens is too curved
- Both of these irregularities occur
These deformities interfere with how the light enters your eye, preventing it from focusing on the surface of the retina. Instead, it focuses in front of the retina, leading to difficulty seeing at a distance.
If you are suffering from this refractive error, you are not alone...
Myopia Affects Millions
Diagnosing myopia is fairly simple...
What to Expect during a Diagnostic Exam:
You will need to visit one of the Silicon Valley Eye Physicians offices in Sunnyvale to undergo an exam. Typically, this process only takes about half an hour. First, you will be asked to read an eye chart. If you struggle to read the smallest letters, we will perform a retinoscope test. By shining a light into the eye, the doctor can evaluate how your eye focuses light.
If the light focuses in front of the retina, you likely have myopia. We can then recommend treatment options to improve your vision.
