Sunnyvale Dry Eye Treatments

Silicon Valley Eye Physicians has some of the most cutting-edge and advanced technologies to quickly and effectively test for dry eye syndrome.

Among our treatments for dry eye syndrome, the most typical treatments start with medicated eye drops, anti-inflammatory drops, or a heated compress. Occasionally, tiny devices called punctal plugs are inserted into the eye’s tear duct to prevent moisture from draining out of the eye. These plugs increase the moisture level for long-term relief.

Let Dr. David Mark and the talented, experienced staff help get you started on the path to real long-term relief from dry eye.

Our Dry Eye Services

At Silicon Valley Eye Physicians, we offer a full spectrum of care for dry eye syndrome—ranging from nutritional guidance and at-home support to advanced in-office therapies. Whether your symptoms are occasional or chronic, we tailor each treatment plan to the root cause of your condition to help protect your eye health and improve daily comfort.

Vitamins & Foods For Dry Eye Relief

Dry eye relief can begin with what’s on your plate. Omega‑3 fatty acids, vitamin A, and antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin all play key roles in maintaining a stable tear film. Incorporating fish, eggs, leafy greens, dairy, and whole grains into your diet can support oil production in the tear layer and reduce inflammation across the ocular surface.

We offer tailored nutritional counseling to help patients support long-term tear quality from the inside out.

Medical Drops and Lubricants

Treatment plans for dry eye vary widely depending on the severity and cause of the condition. Artificial tears (with or without preservatives), anti-inflammatory eye drops, and prescription medications are frequently used to improve moisture retention and reduce discomfort. In many cases, treating underlying conditions like blepharitis or eyelid inflammation is necessary to achieve sustained relief.

During your exam, we’ll recommend a tailored course of treatment based on your symptoms, tear composition, and eyelid health.

MiBo Thermoflo In-Office Therapy

For patients struggling with thickened oil gland blockages, MiBo Thermoflo offers a non-invasive, in-office solution. This therapy delivers continuous heat to the eyelids via warm gel pads to gently melt obstructions in the meibomian glands and restore a healthy tear film.

It’s a quiet, comfortable treatment that helps reduce inflammation and stabilize the eye surface over time.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy

IPL therapy is an advanced in‑office treatment tailored for patients whose dry eye stems from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). By delivering controlled bursts of broad‑spectrum light to the eyelid and surrounding skin, IPL helps liquefy obstructed oils in the glands, reduce inflammation, and eliminate abnormal blood vessels that fuel chronic irritation.

Clinical studies show that most patients undergoing IPL with gland expression report noticeable symptom relief and improved tear‑film stability.

BlephEx® Eyelid Hygiene Therapy

BlephEx® is a quick, in‑office procedure designed to exfoliate and cleanse the eyelids, removing built‑up biofilm, bacteria, crusting and debris that underlie chronic eyelid inflammation and blepharitis — conditions that frequently worsen dry eye symptoms.

The process uses a tiny medical‑grade micro‑sponge rotated along the lash line and lid margin under professional supervision; it typically takes only 6–8 minutes per session and is very well tolerated.

Scleral Contact Lenses

Scleral lenses offer significant relief for individuals with dry eye syndrome by addressing multiple symptoms—discomfort, itchiness, redness, and vision disturbances. Scleral lenses vault over the cornea and rest on the sclera, creating a reservoir of saline that continuously hydrates the eye.

Custom-fitted scleral lenses are a durable and effective treatment option for patients who haven't found success with eye drops or standard therapies.

At-Home Warm Compress Therapy

For patients with mild to moderate symptoms, especially when linked to meibomian gland dysfunction, hot compress eye masks are a gentle and effective first-line option. Moist heat helps soften blockages in the oil glands along the eyelid, improving lipid secretion into the tear film and reducing evaporation.

We often recommend daily use of warm compresses as part of a maintenance routine or in combination with in-office care.

Advanced Heat Therapies for MGD

When dry eye is caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), targeted heat therapies may be required to restore proper gland function. These treatments, which can include meibomian gland expression and intense pulsed light (IPL), are designed to warm and open the oil glands, allowing healthy lipids to flow into the tear film.

This helps prevent rapid tear evaporation and protects against long-term irritation and damage.

Autologous Serum Eye Drops (ASED)

For severe or treatment-resistant dry eye, autologous serum eye drops offer a biologically personalized option. These drops are made from the patient’s own blood serum, which contains natural growth factors, nutrients, and anti-inflammatory components not found in artificial tears.

Though not typically covered by insurance, ASED can be life-changing for patients with advanced ocular surface disease or those who haven’t responded to standard therapy.

TrueTear® Neurostimulation

TrueTear® by Allergan is a prescription device that helps stimulate your body’s natural tear production—no drops required. By delivering a small electrical pulse to the nasal cavity, the device activates the nerves that signal tear glands to release moisture.

This treatment is especially helpful for patients with aqueous-deficient dry eye and can be used at home for short sessions throughout the day. It’s FDA-cleared, drug-free, and completely drop-free.
